What’s Unreal Tournament 2003?

UT2003It’s the sequel to Unreal Tournament, developed by Digital Extremes (with a little help from Epic Games) for the PC. Like the original UT, it’s online multiplayer focused with the single player gameplay consisting of battling it out with bots. For more information, check out GameSpy.com's Review, or better yet, download the demo (here's the Mac version) and try it out for yourself!

UT2003 is powered by the same Unreal Tech being used in Unreal 2 and Unreal Championship.

What's the latest UT2003 patch?

On April 22nd, the UT2003 version 2225 patch was released. It fixes a ton of stuff, and you can download it here. You can find the big list of changes, fixes, and improvements on our patch page.

Before you install the patch, note that your user.ini and ut2003.ini files will be overwritten, if you're updating from the original retail version. This patch includes all the changes made in previous patches, so there's no need to download any other patches before installing the new one.

What's the deal with the Bonus Packs?

Both Epic and Digital Extremes have released official, free bonus packs for UT2003.

The Epic Games Bonus Pack adds three new gametypes (Mutant, Invasion, and Last Man Standing), 10 new maps (6 DM, 1 BR, 1 DOM, 2 CTF), two new adrenaline combos, new announcer voices, and a music player. If you've got the latest patch, you can download it from here.

The Digital Extremes Bonus Pack consists of 6 all-new maps: 3 deathmatch, 2 CTF and 1 Bombing Run. You can download that right here.

Where the vehicles at?

UT2003 comes with a vehicle test map. To try it, bring down the console with "~" and type "open vehicledemo" (without quotes). To use the vehicle, walk up to it, bring up the console and type "use" or press the "U" key if you haven't bound it to anything else. You can drive around, shoot rockets, and that's about it.

What gameplay modes are in UT 2003?

Your standard deathmatch, team deathmatch, and CTF modes, of course. Domination returns with version 2.0, but it's different because there's only two control points this time around, and the goal is to capture both and then defend it for a certain amount of time. If both points are successfully defended, the team receives a point and the control points become neutral again. To prevent one team from continually sitting on the control points, there's a short period of time between control point resets in which neither team can capture the control points. Get it?

UT Assault fans will be disappointed to hear that Assault mode isn't included in UT 2003. It's been replaced by a new mode called Bombing Run, which has been described as “football with a bomb instead of a ball.” After the bomb spawns in the middle of the map, both teams attempt to pick up the bomb and take it to the opposing team’s base. If you succeed, the enemy’s base “blows up” and your team gets a point.

To make things more interesting, you can pass the bomb back and forth between other players. Teamwork and passing are essential, because if you’re carrying the bomb you can’t fire any of your weapons. Nothing stops you from throwing the bomb in the air, wasting some guy, and catching it yourself on the way down, though. You can also pass the ball to an unsuspecting enemy to prevent them from firing at you, kill him, and take the ball back!
